Color Wheelz is sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by Brooklyn Arts Council, Inc. (BAC).
Between 2004 and 2010 Color Wheels traveled to places like Detroit, Greensboro, NYC and Ontario filled to set up installations and facilitate exploration into the world of visual art and narrative. Visitors cover the inside and outside of the van with art made from a variety of colorful materials. Each artwork has a corresponding voice recording describing colors used, materials applied and how the art was inspired. This created a fun way for visitors to think objectively about what they made and why they made it. As a collaborative project visitors engaged with one another and contributed to a collective art installation. This provided an opportunity for people to reflect on their thoughts in a visual way, which resulted in a colorful commentary on each neighborhood we visited.
“We need to focus on building compassionate communities where people have a strong relationship with each other and are genuinely concerned for the welfare of all. Art and culture can function as powerful tools to connect people, strengthen family ties, preserve cultural heritage and build community.” (Moskin, Bill and Jill Jackson “Warrior Angel: The Work of Lily Yeh”)
